What is HPV Screening?

Why is HPV Screening Important?

HPV screening is now considered the first point of call in identifying cervical cancer risk. By detecting high-risk HPV strains early, we can identify those at higher risk of developing cervical cancer. This approach is more efficient and less invasive than starting with a Pap smear for everyone.

What is Cytology?

Cytology is the study of cells. In cervical health, it's most commonly used in Pap smears to detect cellular abnormalities and spot early signs of cervical cancer. While it's been a crucial part of routine healthcare for anyone with a cervix, it's now recommended as a follow-up test for those with persistent high-risk HPV infections.

HPV Screening vs. Pap Smears

By doing HPV screening first, patients can avoid a time-consuming and invasive Pap smear if they don't have high-risk HPV. Pap smears are also time and resource-intensive for public health systems. This is why the World Health Organization (WHO) now recommends HPV screening as the primary method, with cytology only for those with persistent high-risk HPV infections.

Does the HPV Screening Tampon Replace Cytology?

If you test positive for high-risk HPV strains, your healthcare provider may recommend a follow-up Pap smear to check for cellular changes.
