Our Vaginal Microbiome Screening specifically detects the relative abundance of Lactobacilli as a percentage of all bacteria in the sample. Very high levels of Lactobacilli (>90% of all bacteria) are generally associated with a healthy microbiome. However, in rare cases, overproduction of lactic acid by these bacteria has been linked to cytolytic vaginitis.
We are actively working on enhancing our kit in the future by including a vaginal pH test in the kit in the future, which will allow us to identify an abnormally low pH. However, since our service also detects Gardnerella vaginalis and Candida spp., which present with similar symptoms, you would be able to rule out BV and thrush. Thus, the VMS screen, in combination with a low vaginal pH and relevant symptoms, would give a good indication of cytolitic vaginosis.
Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions or if you’re interested in reviewing our service further.
